Welcome to your Confidence Catalyst Newsletter Helping you speak up, step up, and stand out.
As we settle into the early weeks of a new year, many of you will be heading into, or thinking about career conversations with your boss.
This is a conversation I often have because so many high-performing women walk into these conversations without creating their own clarity, instead they ask:
What should I work on?
What do you think I should do next?
Where do you see me going?
They are reasonable questions.
But it quietly hands over ownership of your career.
This edition of Confidence Catalyst is about reclaiming that ownership, with clarity, confidence, and compassion. Let’s look at this through our usual three lenses.
Mindset: You are the leader of your career
Here’s the mindset shift:
Your boss is a stakeholder in your career. You are the leader.
Your manager can open doors. They can advocate. They can sponsor and support.
But they are not living inside your ambitions, values, or long-term vision.
So instead of hoping they’ll do the thinking for you, try this:
👉 My job is to make it easy for my boss to support me.
That means:
- Getting clear on what you want
- Thinking through how it supports the business
- Articulating what would genuinely help
This isn’t pushy. It’s strategic self-leadership.
Behaviour: Ask for something useful (not an opinion)
One of the most powerful upgrades you can make in career conversations is this:
Stop asking for opinions. Start asking for access, exposure, or resources.
Instead of: ❌ “What do you think I should do next?” Try: ✅ “I’d like exposure to X project because it builds Y skill, which supports our priority of Z.”
Instead of: ❌ “Where do you see my development areas?” Try: ✅ “I’d like funding/time for X training because it directly supports our goals this year.”
Do the thinking. Make it specific. Link it to company priorities.
When you do, you stop sounding like someone waiting to be guided and start sounding like someone already operating at the next level.
Compassion: Lead with your strengths, not your gaps
Working on your weaker areas doesn’t automatically increase your impact.
Some development is essential. But not everything needs fixing.
It is often far more powerful to:
- Lean into what you’re already great at
- Build your reputation around your strengths
- Choose development that is a strategic imperative, not a confidence tax
Compassion means:
- Letting go of perfectionism
- Accepting “good enough” where it doesn’t move the needle
- Giving yourself permission to be known for your strengths
Ask yourself:
Where do I create the most value?
What do people rely on me for?
What would happen if I was laser focused on that?
The deeper shift
This isn’t just about better conversations. It’s about a different relationship with your career.
From: Waiting → Leading
Hoping → Positioning
Reacting → Strategising
That’s how careers become future-proofed – not by chance, but by choice.
