Welcome to your Confidence Catalyst Newsletter Helping you speak up, step up, and stand out.
As we move into the early weeks of a new year, I want to share a reflection that’s stayed with me since starting my coaching training with the Institute of Women Centred Coaching Leadership and Facilitation back in 2019.
It’s something simple – but quietly radical.
So many of us give the best of ourselves to others.
Our commitment. Our energy. Our care. Our discipline. Our talents.
And what’s left over… is what we give to ourselves.
What if we turned that around?
What if we started directing our gifts, strengths, and talentstowards ourselves, towards our goals, ambitions, and wellbeing – with the same consistency and intention we offer everyone else?
That question has landed deeply for me over the last few weeks, because, I spent the first week of January immersed in my Gallup Strengths coach training, and I had a real moment of insight. One of my most dominant talent themes isResponsibility, and I realised I almost never turn it towards myself.
I use it to support my clients. To show up consistently. To honour commitments. To hold others with care and integrity.
But I don’t consistently direct that same sense of responsibility towards myself – my goals, my ambitions, or the life I’m creating.
That realisation sparked this edition of the newsletter.
Let’s explore what changes when you turn your strengths inward, through our three lenses:mindset, behaviour, and compassion.
Mindset: Turn your strengths towards yourself
Here’s the mindset shift I want to offer you:
Your strengths are not just for other people.
Many of us are incredibly capable, reliable, empathetic, strategic, and driven, and yet those qualities are disproportionately directed outward.
Ask yourself:
- What do people rely on me for?
- What do I consistently offer others?
- Which strengths come most naturally to me?
Now the key question: What would change if I applied those same strengths to my own goals and ambitions?
If you’re supportive – how might you supportyourself? If you’re strategic – how might you apply that thinking to your own career? If you’re responsible – how might you take responsibility for your energy, boundaries, and priorities?
This isn’t selfish. It’s sustainable.
And it fundamentally changes how you show up and the outcomes you create.
Behaviour: Align your week and month with what matters most
Mindset creates awareness – behaviour creates results.
Rather than adding more to your to-do list, I invite you to look at how you plan your week and month through a different lens.
Start here:
- What are my bigger, longer-term goals right now?
- Where do I want to be placing my energy over the next 3–6 months?
Then ask: How can I turn my best bits towards myself this week?
For example:
- If you’re great at planning for others, plan your week with the same care.
- If you’re excellent at holding others accountable, decide one small promise you will keep to yourself.
- If you’re brilliant at encouraging others, what encouragement do you need right now?
This is about direction, not perfection. Small, intentional choices, stacked consistently, create momentum.
Compassion: Support yourself like you support others
Finally, let’s talk about compassion.
When others struggle, you likely offer:
- Understanding
- Perspective
- Encouragement
- Practical support
- Compassion
When you struggle… do you offer the same?
Turning your strengths inward also means changing the tone of your self-talk.
Instead of: Why can’t I get this right?
Try: What support do I need right now?
Instead of criticism, practise course-correction. Instead of pressure, practise self-leadership.
Ask yourself: How would I speak to someone I care about in this situation, and how can I offer that to myself?
This is where confidence becomes grounded, not performative. And where success becomes sustainable, not exhausting.
What’s next?
This is exactly the kind of work I do in 1:1 coaching.
Together, we:
- Identify your core strengths and how you’re currently using them against yourself
- Reorient those strengths towards your goals, confidence, and career direction
- Build practical strategies that work with who you are – not against you
If you’re ready to start leveraging your strengths for your own benefit, you can book a one-off1:1 coaching session with me.
It’s £175 for a focused, high-impact hour, and it often creates more clarity than months of trying to “figure it out” alone.
You can book your sessionhere.
I’ll leave you with this question:
What strength are you over-giving to others, and what might change if you finally turned it towards yourself?
Have a great week.
