I want to take you to the root of something I see all the time in brilliant, capable women:

Self-concept that doesn’t match their actual capability or potential.

On the surface, it might look like:

  • Hesitating to speak up
  • Downplaying your wins
  • Holding back from the next big move

But underneath it? It’s usually a misalignment in your self-concept – the internal story you hold about who you are and what you’re capable of.

Let me tell you a bit of my own story.

There was a time when I was desperate to prove I was worthy of being a director. So I worked harder. I took on more. I said yes to every project, every extra ask. My calendar was full, I was constantly on the move, and I associated my busyness with my value.

I was so wrapped up in all the things, I didn’t really stop to think about the impact of that.

And the harder I worked to prove myself, the more I had to prove.  It was a brutal cycle, because I hadn’t yet owned the identity of someone leading at that level.

And until I shifted how I sawmyself, and talked to and about myself, I wouldn’t break the cycle.

Let’s look at this through our usual three lenses:

Mindset

You can only grow as far as your beliefs allow. If you believe you’re “not ready,” “not strategic,” “not that kind of leader” – you’ll unconsciously act in ways that reinforce those beliefs. The shift? Adopting a growth mindset: the idea that you are not fixed. Your self-concept can stretch with you.

Let go of the perfectionism that says you need to be flawless to be worthy. Confidence isn’t about getting it all right  – it’s about showing up willing to learn and grow, even when it’s messy.

Behaviour

Your actions are the proof your self-concept needs to shift. Want to see yourself as a confident leader? Take one bold move that proves it. Confidence isn’t a thought exercise, it’s built by taking action, it is built in our successes and our failures.

Pick one small but meaningful action this week:

➡️ Say the thing.

➡️ Ask for the opportunity.

➡️ Set the boundary.

And don’t forget your support systems, prepare, rehearse, check in with your supporters. It’s not weakness to need support. It’s strategy.

Compassion

This is deep work. Changing how you see yourself means letting go of old stories, some of which might have protected you in the past.

So be gentle. You are evolving.

Speak to yourself with the belief and encouragement you offer others. And celebrate the small shifts, they compound over time.

Remember Your self-concept is the foundation of your confidence. If you’re doubting yourself, sabotaging your progress, or shrinking from your own ambition,  it’s not because you’re not good enough. It’s because your self-concept hasn’t caught up with your growth.

So What: That gap between who you are and who you believe yourself to be is where imposter feelings, perfectionism, and stuckness live. Is it time to create a new story about yourself, one that reflects your evolution and growth?

Now What:

✅ Name one belief about yourself that’s overdue an upgrade

✅ Take one bold action that reflects who you’re becoming

✅ Surround yourself with structures that support your growth

✅ Reflect weekly on the ways you’re expanding,  you’ll be amazed what you start to see

So… What’s one outdated story you’re ready to drop –  and one action that proves your new story? I’d love to hear.

Have a brilliant week,

Kirsteen
