Always in a Rush?

For years, I was moving so fast I barely knew what I was thinking, let alone what I was feeling. The to-do list was endless, the pace relentless, and the belief was: faster means better.

Now I know: speed without pause doesn’t lead to confidence, clarity, or success. It leads to stress, short-term fixes, and missing the bigger picture.

Slowing down, finding your calm, changes everything. It helps you feel grounded and confident, make better decisions, communicate with impact, and most importantly, it shifts your body into that crucialrest-and-digest state instead of constant fight-or-flight.

Let’s explore what slowing down really gives you, through the lenses of mindset, behaviour, and compassion.

Mindset: Slowing Down Makes You More Effective

We often think productivity means moving fast. But the most effective leaders aren’t rushing, they’re intentional. When you slow down, you can:

  • Think clearly instead of reactively.
  • See patterns and opportunities you’d otherwise miss.
  • End your day feeling accomplished, not depleted.

Instead of relentlessly moving from one task to the next, or one meeting to the next (like I used to do!) remember that from this place, you might also miss where you are going and why you are going there.

Behaviour: Pause, Breathe, Choose

Slowing down isn’t about doing less, it’s about doing with clarity. Practical ways to bring this in:

  • Before reacting, take one full breath.
  • Notice what feels truly important before jumping into action.
  • Build small pauses into your day, five minutes to step outside, stretch, or simply let your brain reset.

The magic is that when you pause, your next step is more powerful.

Compassion: Stop Pushing All the Time

We’re conditioned to push through, even when we are tired, stressed, or overwhelmed. But you don’t earn your worth by pushing and  overworking. Slowing down is not weakness. It’s wisdom.

  • Give yourself permission to rest.
  • Trust that pausing won’t make you fall behind, it allows you to catch up with yourself.
  • Remember: you are human, not a machine.

Now, Take Action

This week, experiment with slowing down:

  1. Take one conscious pause before a key conversation or decision.
  2. Replace one rushed “yes” with a thoughtful, slower response.
  3. Schedule a pocket of calm into your week (walk, journaling, stillness) and treat it as fuel, not indulgence

Slowing down isn’t about doing less. It’s about leading, deciding, and living with more confidence, clarity, and impact.

Have a great week
