Is this focus eroding your leadership credibility?

Welcome to your Confidence Catalyst Newsletter – helping you speak up, step up, and stand out.

In this edition, I want to spotlight something that seems generous and admirable on the surface, but can quietly erode your leadership credibility underneath:

Over-focusing on others.

Let me illustrate it with a simple analogy:

An orchestra conductor doesn’t play every instrument. Their power lies in holding the tempo, setting the tone, and guiding the whole. Imagine if they dropped the baton and jumped in to play the cello or the trumpet, it might help momentarily, but the whole orchestra would lose its rhythm. As a leader, you know your role is not to do it all, it’s to hold the vision, create coherence, and lead from your seat. Yet we don’t always do what we know!

It feels helpful in the moment, swooping in to rescue a struggling team member, overcompensating for gaps, or constantly being available, but it chips away at your authority, clarity, and capacity.

Here’s how:

Diluted authority- When you rescue others, you unintentionally signal that you don’t trust them to step up.

Undermined standards- Constantly stepping in blurs accountability and disempowers others.

Loss of strategic focus- When you’re always in the weeds, you lose sight of the bigger picture.

Eroded trust –  If your energy is scattered or reactive, others won’t know what to expect from you.

So, what’s the shift?

Let’s explore it through our three familiar lenses:

Mindset

From Others-Focused to Self-Led

Leadership starts with self-leadership. You can’t lead others clearly if you’re not clear yourself. That’s not selfish, it’s strategic.

Ask yourself:

➡️ Am I over-functioning to compensate for something?

➡️ What’s the cost of always being available or helpful?

➡️ What would it look like to lead from grounded clarity instead of constant service?

Self-leadership isn’t about withdrawing, it’s about showing up with intention and integrity.

Behaviour

Simple Shifts to Lead Yourself First

Start with calm – Begin your day with you before it gets claimed by others. Even 5 minutes of stillness gives your nervous system the message: I’m leading today.

Get clear on your impact – Reconnect with your leadership priorities. What only you can do? What will move the needle?

Schedule your priorities (not just your tasks) – Carve out space for strategic thinking, relationship-building, and decision-making. These don’t happen by accident.

And here’s one you are probably not going to like:

Get comfortable saying no – Every no is a yes to something that matters more.

Compassion

Remember Why This Matters

When you lead yourself first, everyone benefits. You become more stable, more visionary, and more trusted.

You’re no longer firefighting, you’re future-building.

✅Start small.

✅Celebrate when you pause before rescuing.

✅Notice the clarity you gain when you hold your own boundaries.

✅Every time you choose intention over reactivity, you reinforce your credibility and expand your influence.

So… where might you be over-functioning or over-focusing on others right now? What would shift if you led yourself first this week?

Hit reply and let me know—I’d love to hear.

Have a brilliant week,

Kirsteen
