“Women don’t help other women enough.”

It’s a sentiment I’ve encountered all too often, and sadly, it aligns with some of my own experiences. Sometimes, women who’ve fought hard to reach the top may feel protective of their position, interpreting others’ confidence as a threat. Others might believe that the struggles they endured are a necessary rite of passage, rather than something they can help ease for those coming up behind them.

But here’s the truth: we can all play a part in changing this dynamic. We can make sure women are heard, seen, and valued for their contributions. When we lift each other up, the impact is transformative—not just for individuals but for the communities, organisations, and industries we touch.

So, how do we change things? Here are five practical ways we can start supporting each other today:

1. Stop Competing and Comparing

We are all unique—comparing ourselves to other women is like comparing elephants to rhubarb! Instead of competing, let’s collaborate.

If someone asks for your support, give it. It’s astonishing how often women shy away from helping others who share a similar mission. Why? We don’t need to compete.

It takes courage to ask for help, so when a woman reaches out, let’s make sure we’re there to catch her.

2. Amplify Each Other’s Voices

Speaking up can be uncomfortable, and many of us want to do it more often. This is where we can take a cue from the Obama administration’s amplification strategy. When a woman shared an idea, others repeated it, giving credit where it was due and ensuring her voice was heard.

Without this kind of support, it’s all too easy for someone else to take the credit. How many times have we seen a man praised for restating what a woman has already said? Let’s make sure her contribution is recognised and celebrated.

3. Create Community

Women thrive in communities where it’s safe to share victories, challenges, and lessons learned. If you’re in a position to create these spaces—whether at work, in your industry, or among your friends—do it.

And if you’re invited to participate, show up. Share your insights and experiences. The strength of any community lies in the willingness of its members to engage and support one another.

4. Ask for What You Need

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a power move. When you need something, be clear and specific. The easier you make it for others to help you, the more likely they are to say yes.

Remember, clarity in your ask isn’t just helpful—it’s empowering. It demonstrates confidence in your abilities and respect for others’ time.

5. Stand Up and Be Seen

Take a stand for what matters to you. Show up as your authentic self, even when it feels vulnerable. Position yourself as a leader in your field or a champion for the causes that you are passionate about.

Being true to who you are isn’t just about personal integrity. It gives others permission to do the same and shows them what’s possible when we lead with authenticity.

Together, We Can Create Change

These five actions—collaborating instead of competing, amplifying voices, building community, asking for what we need, and standing up for our values—are steps toward a better, more supportive future for women.

The truth is, we need each other. When women help women, we create a ripple effect that touches careers, industries, and lives.

Who will you lift up today?
